Best way to clean hepa filter in Vax?

I must have a very dusty house because the hepa filter in my Vax seems to get clogged up so quickly!
I remove surface lint and give it a good shake out each time I've finished hoovering, but it is still very dusty and I can't find an effective way to clean it.
Its made from sort of concertined cardboard, so i can't run it under a tap, I've tried brushing it with an old toothbrush, but that doesn't get into the folds.
The Vax website says they should only need replacing every 12 months (and they are rather pricey) this one I've had 6 months.
Am I doing something wrong? Any tips? The Vax is fine when the dust canister is empty but soon loses suction. I empty it as often as poss. and want to keep the filter clear too.

I clean the filter from my vax using the handbrush from my dustpan & brush. I do it on a weekly basis & am not too gentle when doing it & my filter has been happily coping with this way of being cleaned for over a year now.
For new filters, look on Ebay. You can get 2 for the cost of 1 in the high street shops. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Are you sure you mean the HEPA filter?? Not had a VAX but on a Dyson and Hoover there is usually a foam type main filter wich is rinsable under a tap, leave to air dry, a paper or mesh filter over the motor air intake which are usually disposable. The HEPA filter is treated and ultra fine and usually don't need replacing for the life of the machine unless damaged or you have been vacuuming lots of very fine dust over a long period.
As above, try eBay or your local appliance centre which often have stuff in cheaper than major stores. If you really want to try and clean the filter you describe, then can you borrow someone elses vacuum and do it that way??0
