Connecting Samsung u600 to tomtom

I'm writing this on behalf of my dad, who is having problems keeping his new phone connected to his tomtom500 go.
The bluetooth on the phone is enabled all the time, as is the tomtom. The problem happens each time a function happens the phone and tomtom will disconnect from each other.
ie. if he makes a call, or recieves a call they will disconnect. he then has to get both devices to do a search in order for them to reconnect which takes about a minute, this might not seem a long time but when it's happening several times a day it can be frustrating.
He works as a taxi driver too and needs his phone connected to the tomtom for bits of his job.
I've tried messing with the phone settings to always allow/trust the tomtom, however i can't find any such options.
I'm posting this in the hope that someone has this phone and knows how to work it properly as it has me baffled.
