Freetalk Dixons/Currys online bargin price? [CLOSED]

Options
As far as I can work out, Dixons’ product code 559198, Freetalk One-Year, is being offered at a “seriously reduced” price of £19.99. They seem to have it at no more than the initial hardware costs of the Freetalk Monthly offering.

It’s been offered at that price, since it went up on Thursday, when I thought I’d speculatively buy one. “Why,” I hear you cry, “didn’t you mention it before?” Well, originally, it was titled just “Freetalk Broadband Home Phone Adapter”, as you can see from this screen grab. Originally, I thought, “Ok, maybe I’ve got this wrong. Maybe there isn’t a difference between the two products; the blue and green boxes don’t really exist; they’re all just one box; you choose the plan when you register; they’ll try and sting me for the difference; and, I’ll end up taking it back to Dixons for a refund.” Note, I still haven’t been into a store to see if there are two different coloured boxes with different price tags.

The title has now been amended to “Freetalk 1yr Adapter- Do Sell On This Code Use Oufit Code 975698”. When you search for “Freetalk” or product code 975698, product code 975698 doesn’t come up. However, here is a manually created link to product code 975698. Here, Freetalk One-Year appears as £79.99. The new title on product code 559198 looks like an instruction to staff that they should honour purchases and ship product code 975698. It looks close to deliberate; like they’re selling some off cheap to get going, and then intend to move to product code 975698 with the full price.

Note 1: I’m still waiting on my third and final email from Dixons that forms the contract.

Note 2: The Currys website, effectively being a mirror of Dixons’, also has Freetalk One-Year at £19.99. However, Product code 975698 has not been put up. Product code 559198 shows as “Temporarily Out of Stock”. It also doesn’t show in a search for “Freetalk”, although I don’t know if that’s only because it’s out of stock.

  • Does one product code not offer a years subscription included whereas the 19.99 offer states you need to pay an additional £79.99 for a years subscription ?

The two seem to be one and the same product, just with different price tags. There truly is a one-year package, with the £79.99 as an initial up-front all-inclusive purchase price. It must be that the registration process automatically picks up that you’ve pre-paid for the one-year plan from the hardware’s serial number-MAC pair. Quite how they’ll know if you only paid £19.99 on the web or £79.99 in a store, I don’t know.

The description of the £19.99 offer seems to be a bit of a mess. It says “£79.99 for a Year Subscription”, and then proceeds to imply the first year's calls are free. If you have to pay an extra subscription for the first year, that would make calls “inclusive” to that subscription, and not “free”. If you go by the Freetalk website, the £79.99 cost covers both the plan and the hardware combined. So, there can be no £79.99 as an on-top subscription.

How does that tie in with a current broadband connection using a router?
  • Might be that I am thick and this is a stupid question.....but can you only use this if you have a broadband connection....as we are not on broadband.....thanks..

In practice yes you do need what's commonly called "broadband" e.g ADSL or cable. I'm using a similar service over NTL 2MB broadband and it works great, would struggle over a dialup though.

  • i have just ordered 2, lets see if they turn up at £19.99

on the whole if this costs only 19.99 for the whole year for Unlimited FREE local and national calls (over broad band, )surley this is a great bargain.

i think this is a pricing error.

  • Check the link on PCWorld home page, quite clearly states that 19.99 package is on a monthly subscrption package. The advert you refer to implies the same to me Perhaps just a question of interpretation.

It's a bit suspicious that they don't mention price for other calls e.g. mobile.

The 19.99p price is for the adaptor only you then pay 6.99p monthly. The 79.99p price is for the whole kit and caboodle.
