Also can it be used with windows 98 pc aswell as xp laptop?
Internal HDD May be to big to use on win98.
It's a full size HDD 3.5" so I can't see it fitting in a laptop as most of these are 2.5".Chocolate is the solution to all life's problems. Life happens, also coffee helps.0 -
Hi
Thanx, I went to Aldis on Sat before I got this reply but anyway they didnt have one, sold out. Why would it be too big for windows 98? So anyway I'm still looking for an external one, would that be suitable for windows 98 too?Thanx

Are we talking about the same thing?
Over all size or gB size
I think windows 98 would only see about 1/2 the hard drive.
I had a job to fit a large HDD to a computer with ME
Even on my computer with XP I had to upgrade to OS2 pack and download a patch so that I could see the whole drive.
If I'm right, I may not be, when 98 came out the biggest HDD was around 80gb.....and people used a FAT32 format now we use NTFS format with XP.
Thing move so fast as soon as we get used to one thing something new comes out.Chocolate is the solution to all life's problems. Life happens, also coffee helps.0 -
Oh thanx thats worth remembering. I think I'd just get a bigger hd anyway as I suppose the win 98 wont really last that much longer. It just would have been nice if I coiuld have used it for both but its not that big a deal but thanx for letting me knowThanx

If the OS can't be made to see the full size you can partition it into manageable chunks so you can use it all ie 2 x 125Gb using WD's software.0

WD website says the following
''The downloadable Data Lifeguard Tools now comes in both DOS and Windows versions and was written specifically for the installation of Western Digital EIDE hard drives. If your computer system already has a hard drive installed with an operating system of Windows 98SE or greater, you should use the Windows version of Data Lifeguard for best results. The DOS version is required if installing a hard drive in a new system without existing operating system support.''
If your PC already has a HDD with => Windows 98SE on it, then just connect the new aldi drive to your computer, probably as a slave on IDE 1, download and install the Windows version of the Data Lifeguard Tools utility and reboot your PC. It will detect your unpartitioned/unformatted drive and offer to do it for you from within Windows. You will then have a fully useable new HDD.
The utilty also allows you to make your new drive the boot drive by transferring all files from the old to the new one. (I didn't do this bit so can't comment on how successful it will be). After running this part of the utility, You would need to make your new drive the 'Master' and the old drive the 'Slave' by changing the jumper settings on each drive.
Alternatively, take out the old HDD, make the new one your 'master' disk and pop your Windows installation CD into your CDrom drive. Change your BIOS settings to boot from CD Rom device and restart your machine. Windows installation routine should start.
Good luck COVKID, hope it goes smoothly!0 -
Managed to get it installed ok but having probs.with copying H.D. After about
2.5 to 3.5gigs.comp. re-boots itself even after de-fraging as W.D suggests.
Will try again in morning. Thanks again bigbadgoggs for your help.0 -
Try disabling your Anti-virus program while you are copying (don't forget to make sure you are disconnected from the Internet while it is disabled.)
