Paint peeling off (teflon coated plaster)?!?

Hi, we had a small patch where the paint had blistered away from the plaster on the ceiling of our en-suite (directly over the shower).
Just trying to redocrate now and nothing will key into the plaster (primer, PVA, eggshell....) all just peels off.
The house is 4yrs old and this is the first time we have decorated in that room so no idea what's up with the plaster?

Any ideas before we resort to pulling the ceiling down!!

Liquid sander or Total Surface Preparation (TSP) will etch into the surface and the paint should stay on. However, I've only ever used it on wood and metal not plaster. We did have a problem ceiling at a house before, the paint always peeled off. We used Polycell Basecoat or a similar own brand product (can't remember which) and the paint did stick eventually!

When you used the primer and eggshell, was it water based?

Sounds like the plaster wasn't sealed when the house was built. You may need to use a plaster stabilizer from a decent Decorators Merchants. Expensive, but does the trick. I've used one but can't remember what it was called.

  • No they were oil based, which made the mystery more confusing

Its definately a mystery, as usually the oilbased UC works, the only other suggestion I can give you, is to buy a small tin of 'Zinsser Bin', it comes in a red and white tin, and you can buy it from B&Q, where they keep the specialist paint usually .

Its white, and drys in 30 mins or so, and its excellent stuff, it will take anything, if you do use it, and brush it on the patches, you have to clean your brushes out with meths.
A small tin isnt cheap, its about £13 or thereabouts, but it is excellent stuff, google it, and read up on it.

If this is the case of silicon on the ceiling I wish you all the luck in the world in removing it. I know of no paint that will stick to silicon.

I think you need to talk to the decorators at the building experience forum for the advice of experts.

hi there bespoke, your right, silicone is a nightmare to cover, specially if your trying to emulsion over it.
I find it worse round window reveals, but the trick is to undercoat the silicone first with an oilbase UC at least twice, then when dry, emulsion as usual, and it will stick to it, but fennster has tried the oilbase, and it hasnt worked, so it might not be silicone, I havent a clue either, any chance of fennster showing a pic?
  • Loads of good ideas but will any/all of these be limited by the current fix of the paint to the plaster? Do I need to strip the whole ceiling back to plaster or will some of the products soak/fix through the current layer of emulsion??
The problem tends to appear in patches when we've applied something over the top so I'd prefer something to coat the whole ceiling before trying any further paint.
