Not if your going to Northern Ireland, no. Although if your flying I would check with them if you will need one. I'm thinking of going there too, my boyfriend has no passport.Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.0

Entry requirements for UK nationals: British citizens travelling from Great Britain to Ireland only require proof of nationality. Otherwise British travellers coming from another country require a passport. No visa is required if the passport is endorsed British Citizen, British National (Overseas) or British Overseas Territories Citizen. In all other cases, a visa is required.

I think you more than likely need a passport to go to the Republic of Ireland. I have always had to use one. If going to Northern Ireland you may be able to use other photo ID such as new style driving license but it depends on whether the airline (if you're flying) require you to. I flew to Scotland with BA and only needed photo ID as it was within the UK.Old enough to know better, too young to care!0

Yes, you need a passport to go to the Republic of Ireland.
I flew to Dublin (Republic of Ireland) in December with no passport - just photo driving licence.
It was absolutely fine and no issues. When anyone asked to show passports we just said one has photo id but no passport and no-one had any problems at all. However, apparently it does depend entirely on the air line. Aer Lingus state on their website that it is fine, BA stated that you needed a passport unless it was "domestic flight" which I couldn't find a complete definition for but looked like it was only UK, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
However, in the autumn the airlines are all increasing security and everyone will apparently need a passport.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
The official advice from the Foreign Office is:Ireland, along with the UK, is a member of the Common Travel Area. This means that British Citizens do not require a passport to visit Ireland. However, Irish immigration officers will check the IDs of all passengers arriving by air from the UK and most airlines will not carry passengers to and from Ireland unless they have seen satisfactory photographic ID before boarding. Travellers to Ireland are therefore encouraged to take their British passports with them.

Passengers under the age of 16 travelling with an adult who has photo ID do not require their own ID. Young passengers travelling alone between the ages of 12 and 15 are required to have photo ID.
Aer Lingus may ask you to present valid Photo ID at check in or at the boarding gate for all flights. Failure to do so may result in refusal to travel.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
