Setting Up on my own as a Virtual Assistant

I'm thinking of setting up by myself as a virtual assistant essentially doing PA work form home.

I'm due to go on maternity leave in October of this year and probably won't be able to afford to return to work full time...so thinking ahead already in anticipation

Can anyone give me advice on registering for VAT if and when I'd have to do it etc or where i can find the info on the web...

Also has anyone done this type of work and has any suggestions as to where i can advertise my business to get more work? or other hints and tips.

  • I'm slightly confused by the concept..but just to let you know that Personal Income Tax is on anything over £6,035.As I am not sure what you mean by VAT?

I think you only have to register for VAT once you turnover is over 60k (roughly).. So, you don't have to do anything just yet.

Is the product you offer VAT exempt?

    Also, National Insurance Contributions aswell..

    Good Luck.. :)

I know about regsitering as self employed tax NI etc..

thanks for the hint re VAT found this....for those who'd liek to know...so i guess that would be a no until my turnover is over £67k !! i wish.

Businesses that may not charge VAT

Businesses with annual sales below £67,000 (2008-2009) don't have to register for (and therefore charge) VAT, but they may choose to do so voluntarily. If they don't, the price you pay for their goods or services may be cheaper than if you bought the same goods or services from a VAT-registered supplier.

It's not a product but a service I'd be providing - Copy typing, diary management, etc etc from a virtual essentially someone would be paying for my time to do work rather than the work i'd be supplying.....does anyone know where i can find out if the service i supply is tax exempt.

ring the revenue for free advise they have to tell you what you need to know and make sure you note down your call and details incase you need to refer to them again, that way asking the people who actually work in vat you will be able to find out anything you need to know and they may be able to send you any informative packs that your may need
