Ground Covering

We have just levelled our front garden and put down a weed carpet which lets moisture in to the ground but keeps out light so weeds won't grow back.
Most of the gardens here have stones in and I wondered if this was an environmentally friendly option.
I eventually want a front garden full of lavendar, some veg and herbs but not got time at mo to get the plants in.
I want it to look smart, so would like some ground covering. And we are putting in a bike shed so would need some kind of ground covering to wheel bikes over.
I wondered about bark chippings but can't seem to find any from a sustainable source.

What about contacting some local tree surgeons to see if you can have/buy some of their wood chippings from taking trees down?0

Try strawberries !! Plant a few plants now. Each plant will produce lots of little "runners", (miniature plants) on a long stem which can be separated from the main plant by the end of the season, which will become a plant in its own right. You will soon have the whole area completely covered with plants . Weeds won't be able to get a look in, the strawberries produce pretty white flowers which the bees like and you will have lots of free fruit for several years. The plants are also very frost hardy so won't need any cosseting.0
