this may be in the wrong forum but it is a techi question i feel.
i have a broadband connection (who hasn't these days) and assummed it was "always on".
when i shut down my computer for the night and put it to bed, i then have to restart my computer (obviously) but if i want to access the internet i need to manually open up my connection.
cant seem to find anyway of starting the computer and the connection automatically kicking in.
i have tried the "run-msconfig", start up thingy but still not able to fix this.
is it really "always-on" or is it just that after 1hrs continuous use (dial up) you don't get disconnected??

What do you mean by manually open up your connection?
Make sure 'never dial a connection' is selected in your browser.
For IE its here:
Tools | Internet Options | Connections0 -
i thought it was: turn on computer, open I.E, surf web.
for me it is: turn on computer, open connection, open I.E, surf webfatblokexl:EasterBun:0 -
Hi,
I understand what you mean as, when I first got broadband, I assumed I would not have to "connect" when I switched my pc on, that it would already be online. However I had to tell it to connect manually before I could use the internet. That was with BT broadband. I'm still with BT but now that I have a network connection which uses a different box, I no longer need to do anything in order for it to connect. I just turn on the pc & it's connected already (apart from I can manually switch the router on/off, obviously).
It may depend on who your provider is too because when I used my sister's pc, she did not have to tell it to connect either. That was with AOL.
I don't think there is anyway to change the settings, though I could be wrong. Have you tried asking your service provider? That's all I can think of.0 -
have just messed around with the settings and i can now, turn on comp, open I.E, (wait approx 3 secs to connect, surf web................im with tesco broadband using thier supplied thomson modem.....................perhaps i'm just being picky??????fatblokexl:EasterBun:0

have no experience with that one, but glad you got it sorted (so long as you don't mind the 3sec wait?! )0 -
Hiya all
Just to clarify for you...! The connection Loopylou has it a router connection, this means that her router is permantnly connected to the internet... the username & password for the broadband will be programmed into that and that maintains the connection... when you boot up your computer, it automatically looks at the router and goes out through that.
With a modem, you need to dial up manually... but as you say, it's just a case of going into IE and Tools > Options > Connections and setting it up to auto-dial the broadband connection... then you'll be fine!
