    For johng_uk,
From the excellent daily mash spoof newspaper

BRITAIN will today pick out a nice, new handcart as it completes its preparations for the journey to Hell.

Rustic handcarts are very much in keeping with the type of house no-one can get a mortgage for

With everything now worse than it was in 1978, the country is in the market for an economical cart, without compromising on comfort or safety.

Handcart sales executive Tom Logan said: "The journey to Hell will be fairly quick, so luxury needn't be a top priority."

He added: "I'd go for something with plenty of leg-room, but at the same time easy to park.

"The last thing you want is to arrive in Hell, with 15 million screaming kids in the back, and drive round and round for an hour, looking for a space."

Meanwhile Tory leader David Cameron is proposing a points system for access to the handcart, while prime minister Gordon Brown wants to borrow £2.7 billion to buy everyone a handcart of their own.

A senior Labour strategist said: "We think that by the time we get to Hell we'll still have a chance of winning the next election, and voters are going to remember the type of handcart they arrived in."

Not if people keep taking them off to hell, not many come back, and I would't fancy the job of recovering them. ;)
    *slaps own forehead*

I hadn't thought of that! I didn't do my research, did I? My investment would have, quite literally, gone up in smoke:)

Are donkeys good with a paintbrush. then?:p

I had never heard the expression 'going to hell in a handcart' untill the other day, now I keep reading it everywhere someone is talking about the economy.

........wonder if it is worth investing in a couple of handcarts? May rent them out for a while and then sell them when I retire - with this kind of demand prices can only keep going up.....

*disappears off to google for handcart companies
Ha de Ha !! Late night posts don't ever read right?! I don't think the Chinese make paint brushes to fit cloven hooves just yet (but if there was a demand, they would)

I may take Lostinrates tip and go for a Husky instead (to help pull it, not paint it)......2 donkeys....mind you, would go quicker. Is that where the phrase Horse power came from? The more anilmals you have to pull it, the faster it goes

TEAM of huskies, really! Still, too dog eared for me.

I pesonally would consider a mule. I even have a mule in mind but DH would go potty if I told him we (ie he) was going to also have the mule as a riding animal instead of the horse. So my guess is we will go for a second horse. More traditional and can probably pick up a ride and drive cheaper than a mule anyway. Seriously though, we're going to do it.

A typical horse produces 4 horsepower I believe.

    James Watt invented it.

In Devon, there was an expression (back in the 60s at any rate) 'Drunk as a handcart.' I heard it frequently, despite a noticeable lack of handcarts by that time.

Doesn't make sense really. 1 horse should make 1 horsepower.

Mules....but you ride it to work, where do you park it? Horses and carts aren't going to make a comeback I think.

I've never been on a horse.
I bet your legs smell when you get off.
Not that people go round sniffing the legs of others (unless I've been unlucky and missed out all the sniffy action).
