It's a bit pointless trying to advise the Op about police matters if everyone claims to be an expert. I find myself abused for giving the OP advice 'straight from the horse's mouth' and saving her a fruitless and frustrating trip to her local nick. I live and breathe this stuff but you can please yourselves.

OP - sorry that you've been confused. Go to your nick if you don't believe me, Premier and Consumer Direct. You'll waste your time, though.

Au contraire, the police do not make laws, they are there to enforce them. OP has had money which belonged to them stolen, theft and fraud is a crime. Not a crime in the eyes of todays plastic police force who have to meet silly gubmint targets instead of protect and serve. Police are a total waste of time and effort which is why it is not worth reporting crime these days as you will only get fobbed off by some comedy cop who did a four week course on how to drink coffee whilst wearing a hi vis vest:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Not nowadays IIRC - not long ago, HMRC lost their preferencial creditor status, meaning they have to fight for their piece of the pie like everyone else!

HMRC lost their preferential status in bankruptcy cases, Enterprise Act of 2002.

Offer to ring the tax man up and tell them of his car dealership business

So, so far OP has been advised to report this as theft (it's not) and now to attempt some lame sort of blackmail?

OK, I'll tell the Detective Constable (10 yrs experience) sat next to me that they are obviously mistaken.

Do you always have some policeman sat next to you when you post to internet forums??

The seller took a deposit to stop the buyer from time wasting, as I would. The seller wanted to pull out so should have payed them the deposit back fair and sqaure. This to me would definatley sound like theft. That is of course that we have heard the whole story, still only one side of it though. I say let the courts deal with it.
