Faulty PC monitor - got receipt - not accepted as proof of purchase !?

Hi folks, I bought a PC monitor from a well-respected computer fair. I have the Switch receipt for £145, dated 9th March 2008. It has developed a fault where the screen goes completely dim for ages then sometimes kicks back in, sometimes not. I know it's the monitor as I have just changed the motherboard and graphics card, and tried both HDMI and VGA inputs - still the same problem.
Inside the box is a 3 year warranty card which tells you to get in touch with a company called repairtech with any warranty issues. I did this as I thought it's easier than carting the monitor back to the next computer fair, plus at least this company apparently do at -home exchanges - great.
I e-mailed them and they asked me to scan the proof of purchase - I also got this as part of the response which I thought was a bit of an 'aye up' line .... 'Please note that specific invoice formats may be deemed unacceptable under the circumstances of the claim.',
I then chased this up as I had no reply and got this 'I have looked into this for you and unfortunately we are unable to accept the proof of purchase as it doesn't state on there what you purchased and is some type of credit card payment. Please can I request you contact your supplier for a convenient invoice/receipt.'
I am a retail store manager and I am sure that even a bank statement qualifies as proof of a purchase, or are this third party company trying to get out of it because they did not originally sell the product ? At very least, there's no way the monitor has been on the market for 3 years and I have only had this one for less than 3 months before it went wrong !
Any ideas would be appreciated as to what I can do next, or do I find myself going down to the next fair in the hope they will be there ?
Thanks in advance guys !!
PS on a different note, my TomTom went faulty this week - called em up, no need to send receipt, they sent me a special delivery box to return it in and jobs a good un!!

What if I can't find the receipt?
You have the same rights even if you have lost your receipt, though the onus will be on you to prove when and where you bought the goods. An alternative proof of purchase such as a bank statement or credit card bill should suffice.
Yeah I know what you're saying, of course, but this is from the Guardian website and I can prove when and where I bought the item from the card slip. Even if I had a 'proper' invoice it wouldn't necessarily state exactly what the item is - ie 'PC monitor - £145'0 -
your card receipt should be accepted as proof of purchase.
Maybe contact the original seller to obtain a replacement, your contract will be with them at first.
Remember the law says within six months of purchase they have to prove it was not faulty when it was sold.0 -
Yeah I have found a website for the trader, seems bizarre that a warranty claim gets knocked back for a less than cast iron reason ... I suppose the untrustworthy claimants let the rest down eh.
I have e-mailed the trader (based miles away in Lancs) to ask if they can e-mail me a 'proper' invoice or let me know when they are next at the computer fair so I can get a refund.
Let's see if they get back to me.0 -
Fraid the manufacturer can include this type of term, as stated the contract of sale and any rights due under are with the trader who sold you item.
Also consider contacting your bank see if they have any further details they can provide such as trader name, invoice reference, goods purchased etc, might do instead of an invoice.click here to achieve nothing!0 -
OP, the only person/company (AFAIK) who must consider a bank statement or CC slip as (acceptable) PoP is the shop/trader you bought goods from as this is who your protection under SOGA is with.
Otherwise, any Tom, !!!!!! or Harry could buy old goods cheap and send them off to the manufacturer/ warranty company for repair/replacement with any old slip.

Fair point, thanks. I haven't had a reply from them today ... I guess I will have to see if they're at the next fair.
If they aren't, I reckon I would be screwed regardless as they could say exactly the same thing - ie receipt doesn't relate to item, prove it !!0 -

Presumably the credit card receipt (or debit card) will have the merchant ID and terminal number printed on it (I believe this is always printed regardless of if the merchant has added their own company name) - this would tie the reciept to a specific merchantI have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.
