ipod to pc transfer

Today I have had a major problem with my son's pc. After spending most of the day on it, I have managed to format and get everything back, apart from his itunes. He has about 500 songs on his ipod and I need a reliable, safe and easy way to get them back.
Ideally free, but happy to pay a bit for something which works.
Any advice gratefully received as I have spent ages and only found sites at $19.99 without any non biased reviews.

    I have used iDUMP. It worked for me and was free just google it.

    If you go into the ipod and then folder options and "show hidden files"... it'll show all the songs.. they'll be called weird thigs like HFKS and LOGO or FOLA... random 4 letter combinations, but if you import them back into ITUNES they real names and artists will appear.. :) hope that helps..

    Thanks to you all. I tried to do it directly and it played up for me as I am not very tech minded, so I used idump and we are sorted. All backed up to a portable hard drive as well, so I won't have the same problem again. :rotfl:
