I am planning to build a downstairs diabled toilet.
It will be like a lean to using the existing back door as the entrance and building a new back door.
Question is do the doors have to be the wide doors for wheelchair access or can I use standard size doore (the disabiled person does not need a wheelchair )

Just wondered does the disabled person live in this house because if they do they may be intitled to a disability facility grant. It is means tested but not for a child. You would need an occupational therapy assessment who will then go through social services and advice what is best suited for the disabled persons needs the grant would cover the cost of the downstairs toilet if that what they frrl is needed. Of course you may already know about this.We have had our bathroom converted to a shower room for our daughter with this grant. we also had a shower toilet put in as she is unable to clean herself. Toilet has a bidet function ie wash and blow dry excellent for her. Hope this might help even though I have not answed your question sorry.0

i have a feeling (although where from i don't know!) that regular sized doors are ok for a wheelchair (even though that's not what you need), but they have to open outwards (ie: towards you) which your old back door should do.

Does the person using the toilet utilise any walking aids as that will be important consideration, also consider positioning of the bathroom furniture. Check with your local social services about a disabled facility grant or a home improvement grant in Scotland, will need an occupational therapy assessment and the grant will depend on functional ability and the other facilities in the property. Remember you may need planning permission and if you are looking at a toilet for a disabled person there are minimum space for activity and circulation. The doors opening outwards isn't true for residential properties. The toilets mentioned above for cleaning are closomat or gerberit belena type toilets if it helps to have names to look up on the internet, definitely much better than the units that fix onto standard toilets.
Hope that helps, post more questions on here if we can help! Thanks for the advice Martin! :money:Member no. 920 - Proud to be dealing with our debts0 -
Phone your council for advice. The social work department are good.
In Scotland you require a 'Building Warrant' permission for this type of work sometimes, the fee may be waived with doctors letters etc. The council are really helpful on these types of things and give FREE advice.baldly going on...0 -
It is the gerberit balena toilet we have all singing and dancing!! We were suppose to have a closomat but the gerberit is apparently much better we are very impressed by it. But at 3000 pounds you would not want to buy it yourself!!0
