Problem with Sony laptop keyboard when using Microsoft wireless keyboard.

Hello everyone.
I have a Sony laptop but when I'm at home I prefer to use a wireless keyboard because I don't want to sit too close to the screen and it has a numeric keypad.
My problem is that when I take the laptop out I don't take the wireless keyboard with me but then some of the keys don't display what they should do i.e. when I press P then * comes up instead. This is the same with a few other keys.
I've checked the keyboard, language and regional settings and they are all set to English (United Kingdom) so I'm sure that's not the problem.
Any help would be much appreciated and many thanks in advance.
Pete.
