Visa Cards for School Kids?

I know Bank of Scotland used to do it as my neighbour's children all had them. Not sure if they still do though.clarkedexter wrote: »Sorry, but what bank is this?
The only one I knew did this was Barclays, and I thought they asked for parental permission
I think it's a good idea. And I don't think a parent should have to be consulted. If the kid has his own money then it's his to decide what to do with. If a parent doesn't want their kid spending their own money then don't give them money in the first place. Simple.0 -
Sorry but when I was under-18 and had an Electron card I went in negative a few times and they charged me, of course I rang them up and told them to remove the charges and they did promptly. This was with Halifax.0

What is the problem here? It is teaching young people to be responsible and preparing for the future when the banks begin phasing out of cash, cash is unsafe and expensive to produce and manage, plastic is secure and low cost to manage, why do we need cash? Simple answer is we do not.
I was merely commenting that it should be made clear there is no credit faclity available on the card. When I was that age, we had 'Link' cards - which was different to everything else and you knew it only operated cash machines. With electron it says 'Visa', so is easily confused with the product of the same name that does offer credit.
I am all for financial education - it amazes me that in the 21st C they still do things like religious education, but do not teach about money!I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?0 -
Electron is hopefully getting phased out, it is about as useful as a square wheel, I got stuck with one of these from the age of 18 till January this year when I moved my business to Alliance and Leicester who give proper facilities to their customers, I have two boys one aged 4 and the other aged 6 month, when they hit the teens I will make sure they get half decent banking facilities, including VISA.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0

Ah yes religious brain washing, hmm I refused this at school and got expelled because I am an Atheist, missed out on my GCSE's, but you are right schools should educate pupils on things like credit, banks, savings, credit reference agencies and the consequences of paying late, over committing and bumping people.surreysaver wrote: »I was merely commenting that it should be made clear there is no credit faclity available on the card. I used to do a job where we didn't accept solo and electron because we didn't have online authorisation facilities. One punter who started to complain I just told her to go and get a 'proper' credit or debit card, to which she took offence!I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?0
