Some people, like myself for instance, have a deep-seated, irrational fear of direct debits. To me, it's like signing a piece of paper that says "here's my account number, feel free to take any amount of money you wish, at any time, for any reason, without notice, with some flaky thing called a 'direct-debit guarantee' which probably isn't worth the paper it's written on".
I would quite frankly rather saw my own arm off than set up any more direct debits than I have to.
The DD guarantee will assist in all errors made. You just phone your bank up when you see the wrong amount/date etc and they just reverse it. No questions asked.0 -

Like I said, deep seated and irrational fear
I figure it can't be that easy to get a refund. At least you would have to ring an 0871 number, and since I have a mobile only it would be 55p per minute. Then, you would have to provide proof that you didn't authorise something, and proving that you didn't do something is always really really hard.
Perhaps it is as easy as you say (I have no experience with this, just bad experiences with UK companies in general). But I like to be in COMPLETE control of my money. You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.0 -
You don't have to "prove that you didn't authorise something". They have to prove that you DID authorise something.
And it shouldn't cost you 55p a minute to call your bank, unless you bank with the wrong bank. I don't know any bank that uses 0871 phone numbers, in fact.0 -
Over the weekend I discovered that Barclaycard had taken over £2,100 from my Barclays current account. This was money lent to me my family members in order to enable me to pay my bills until my business recovers in January 2009. This was essential funding, without which I will not be able to pay my mortgage. How do I recover this money?0

entseo, I'm guessing you had a debt on your Barclaycard?
I believe that most accounts full T&C gives the bank the right to offset money from one account to pay debts owed on another account generally
Keep your money in an account that is unconnected from your debtors.0 -

This wouldn't apply in this case as it was a debit card payment over the phone and not a direct debit.
I think £50 is pretty good compensation considering that it wouldn't have earned that amount in interest had the error never happened.
My point still stands, but this thread is quite old.0 -

It depends on why Barclays took it.
Do you owe them money on another account ? If so, they are within their rights to take the money from an account that does have money in to pay off another debt.
This is also the case for any accounts you have that are owned by Barclays, but are branded as something else eg. Sky Mastercard.0 -

Make sure that they know that and if the worst happens and you do lose out on the house, go to the newspapers with it.
Also get the solicitor that's dealing with your house purchase to lean on them.0 -
