Pets FAO LL's and Tennants

  • This a really bad idea for everyone concerned. I take it you have never owned a dog and certainly not a cocker spaniel. I don't think anyone would advise that a one bedroom flat is a suitable environment for a pet like that.

If you are only buying a dog because your OH will be lonely when you are away one week a month then that is not enough reason.

I very much doubt your landlord will give you permission and if they do they are an idiot! If you really want a pet you need to choose something more manageable and appropriate to a one bed flat with no garden, or move to a larger property with some outdoor space.

I second PN as well, a dog in a flat is not ideal, a puppy in a flat is plain unfair on the puppy and the neighbours.

You say your partner is having an op so will be at home, but will that op mean OH can walk the dog? What if the dog pulls on the lead? will you OH get pulled over. Will they be able to pick up the dog poo from the ground. What about training? There are so many things that have the potential to ruin your dog ownership experience.

If you want OH to have some company get a house cat or small pet like a hamster or budgie that are fun to watch, but not a puppy.

well i know what everyone will say to this suggestion and thats why i didnt make it before but rats make very good pets. they are intelligent, affectionate and easy to look after, they learn their names and are really cute. i had 2 rats (with my first cat) and they are very entertaining. you can let them out to play on the carpet as long as you dont give them an escape route! you need 2 together though or they get lonely

Yeah to rats! I had two when I was a teenager and they were fantastic pets. I was also going to suggest it but I thought the OP probably wouldn't be that into the idea. They are playful, can be trained, and are very clean animals. Domestic rats are soo cute, they're not at all how most people imagine them. The LL may be happier with a compromise such as this, they are very unlikely to let you have a dog.

There are breeds of dogs that do make suitable companions in flats.

Puppies are difficult in flats, not least because the house training is harder.

Whata bout rehoming an older dog, who can cope being alone for the odd half day and who is flat trained already? It might not be so cute an idea as a puppy but you are more likely to have a satisfactory outcome.
