Late licensing penalty

Options
can anyone help please.Few months ago my son had his car scrapped as to expensive to repair. My local garage had another garage who would scrap the car and would sort out paperwork.Log book was handed over and we thought that was the end of it.My son receives a letter from DVLA failing to relicense this car, has to pay fine of £80.We filled out form which gave them details of garage who had scrapped car.Letter came back thankyou for letting them no that vehicle had been scrapped etc.Thought that was end of it.Few weeks later another letter from DVLA saying that when their dept has been advised that the keeper of the vehicle has changed an acknowledgement letter isthen sent out to us, if we have not received this letter within 4 weeks its up to us to pursue the letter, if we cannot provide a copy of this acknowledgement we are still liable for this fine.We have tried contacting the garage but with no reply. Can anyone help with this matter please

You need to do as they say TBH. DVLA are noted for their intransigence in this matter.

Forward this "Letter came back thankyou for letting them no that vehicle had been scrapped" to the DVLA and all should be done.

Sorry but your not going to like this but the penalty would still stand as your son failed to inform DVLA that he sold the vehicle at the time, and he would have been the registered keeper when the tax expired.

The letter you had saying it had been scrapped was as a result of you/him filling out the disposal section on the reverse of the penalty letter.

You could put an appeal in writing to the office that sent the penalty if you wish but it is very unlikely to be granted, and your son could also receive penalty for failure to notify disposal at the time (not trying to scare you!)

The penalty would only be waived if you had a disposal letter from DVLA dated prior to the penalty being issued.

It is the registered keeper responsibilty to inform DVLA of the disposal of a vehicle not the garage/new keeper.
