Dating Direct

Hello, a bit of a long story here, but I joined up to Dating Direct a few months ago, paying for this service using my credit card (so I would get cash back). In March/April I cancelled my subsciption, when I checked back to their site, my photo had vanished and I couldn't use the site, my profile stayed up (which seems to happen to non-members) so I thought everything had been successfully cancelled.
However, when I received my credit card statement, I had been charged for April, I decided not to worry about this, as I wasn't sure exactly the date I cancelled. BUT in May I have also been charged, so I tried to find a way of contacting the site. When I attempted to log on, there was my profile- still a
full member!!
So again I clicked cancel, and was told an email would be sent to me and I would need to click on the link contained within it. Needless to say, no email! I tried this 6 times over the course of 4 days, nothing. I emailed the Dating Direct help desk, which has to be done through their site, and got an email to my (private) email address saying a response to my query had been sent to my DD email address. When I tried to log on, I was told my user ID/password was incorrect.
I have now sent a letter in to them, asking for someone to call me to explain this within the next 7 days, or I will take neccessary steps. Even though I'm not sure what the neccessary steps are.
The most worrying thing is, when I contacted my credit card company, they say that I can't block a company from taking funds from my acccount- can this be right?
Any advice, please?

Maybe they can't block a particular company from taking funds/payments but they can certainly do a chargeback aginst false charges!

If you set up a recuring payment on a CC (as oposed to by DD) you have given your authorisation for it to be taken by the payee on demand. I.e. only the payee can cancel it (which they should do without hassle when you call them up and request it)
It is explained more clearly (I think) in Martin's article on Direct Debits.

Had a letter reply from them, saying that they have refunded the May payment (checked with credit card company and this is true) and that my account is now closed. No apology for all the hasle though- what's wrong with these companies!
Will still be checking to see if a June payment comes out!! Untrusting- me?!0
