warning - new zonealarm pro!! (wireless network)

This is a follow up posting to my last (re wireless network probs and ZoneAlarm Pro and MSN).

After many many hours of searching, asking advice and fidlling - I joined the ZoneAlarm forum.

It seems that all my problems were connected - MSN AND ZONEALARM PRO.

It wouldnt let me uninstall, delete, upgrade, reinstall etc etc. I was still having probs re MSN Messenger too (the kids have been pestering me like mad).

Anyway, I finally discovered that many many people who PAY FOR 'Z.A. Pro' and have recently updated (to version 6) are having the same problems. It seems that this version is corrupt. Nobody from Zone Alarm was answering emails and we were all haveing real problems.

Just look at the postings here:
http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board?board.id=inst
and their other forum threads!

I have at last deleted the damn thing and as previous versions have NEVER given me any problems, I am going back to the FREE Version. I am just miffed that I have now lost the rest of this years use that I had already paid for!

As soon as I followed the lengthy process (a posting from 'wibs' entitled SUCCESS!!), I had no other problems and MSN works fine too!!

Thanks to all those that tried to help out.
Jazz

PS I am now, at last, chuffed to bits with my wireless network - a BELKIN ROUTER / CARDS, quite inexpensve and an easy set up.

Congratulations on final success but I think you have let an opportunity go by. You had the perfect excuse to break the kids' addiction to MSN and you didn't take it!!!

P.S. the problems also affected the free release. Version 6.0.631 appears to be the source of the problem.

LOL! Unfortunatley, it wouldnt have been easy as they have about 40 other teenagers each that they talk to this way.

I had a thought about your subscription for Zonealarm Pro...........

As scotty has pointed out, this problem affects the version 6 release of Zonealarm.

Why not have a look HERE and download the last release of version 5 (5.5.094.000). Your registration number will work in this version and give you access to the latest updates. You can use this version untill the problems with version 6 are fixed, then upgrade.

I'm still using version 5 (as above). I've held off upgrading this because of all the problems I've read about with version 6.

At least this way you will still get to use your paid for subscription. Zonealarm Pro is a far superior version than the free one, and gives you far more control over access to the net.

Doesn't your router have a hardware firewall inbuilt?

Even with a hardware firewall in the router. It's still not a bad idea to have a software firewall. Hardware firewalls offer good protection from outside traffic, but don't monitor anything leaving your computer. This is where a software firewall is handy. It will alert you to any new programs trying to call out from your PC and ask you for permission to allow it or not. This could help spot any malware (trojans, spyware etc) trying to call out of your computer with your info.

I run my Zonealarm Pro along with the firewall in the router. I know that everything is monitored on the way in, or out of my computer.
