if it hibernates when you close the lid, it can sometimes cause slowness problems when you resume from hibernation. you should shut it down occasionally, if only to let the windows updates install properly.
Firefox can be a bit of a memory hog, especially with lots of tabs open, is it still slow after you close/reopen firefox?
how much ram do you have, if less than 512meg that could be an issue? is it malware free, you have good av/antispyware software?
is everything slow, or just surfing?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Everything! Its got 758MB ram 1 x 256mb and 1 x 512 stuck at the mo. I was going to increase the ram to 1.5GB and see how that affects it. It can be a good week of not turning the computer off. Malware free? I have avg anti virus. The hard disk has arrived this morning and i'll be doing the restore to the partition this afternoon.

758 is enough for smooth running of XP, ram is unlikely to be your problem.

Hi.
i can give you some suggestion regarding recovery and restore. You can restore your drive using system restore or pressing f9. If you want to erase your hard drive completely then by format you can delete your data and install fresh copy of windows copy. After that using data recovery software you will be able to restore your previous data or using file recovery you can recover your important files.

Go to Start > Run >
Enter "cmd", which will prompt your DOS box to load
At the cursor enter: " format c:" - ( on the assuption that C is your hard drive, replace C with whatever your HD is)
This will clear your drive, and then re-install XP after it has been wiped.
@ mercurystar999,
One of the F keys will take you to the recovery partition where you can put your machine in to it's "back to the box" state, but bear in mind this will wipe the drive completely so make sure you have a backup of any personal data.
I would also advise you use the included utility to make a restore disc set in case of HDD failure.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -
