Where to stay nr barcelona?

Hi,
I am planning our summer holiday! Still, not booked but i have found some cheap flights to Barcelona girona and am wondering where is good to stay near by?
I am really thick and have never been to mainland spain. I have a small budget and I want to milk it as far as possible over the whole of august as DH and I will both be off the whole month. We have 5 kids so a beach type holiday something simple but dh and I really hate chavvy places, alas the kids love it! I am hoping thinking something simple perhaps with a pool but nr the beach.
Ideas plz?
Thank you all so much.

We have stayed at both the Hotel Papi (slightly old fashioned but food good) and the Hotel Maripins in Malgrat. Not to far from Girona airport. Both hotels we booked through www.xcapewithus.co.uk. Very good value at just over £10 a day half board in spring and autumn. Check the reviews on Tripadvisor.

Girona serves the Costa Brava so there should be lots of information about many options.

Not tried these myself but have heard good things about www.ownersdirect.co.uk and www.holiday-rentals.co.uk

Everywhere will be busy in August - the Spanish (and Frensh as it is only just up the road) go on holiday as well as us.

I have just got back from Costa Brava - we stayed in San Pol/S'agaro - very quiet, very non-chavy, clean beach. Very cheap at half-term but I imagine prices will go up a lot in August - I didn't see anywhere I would not stay (there are very few hotels). Full of French in hotel so food not bad (S'Agaro Mar) - I would go back to the hotel particularly at the price we paid (£260 total half board for 2 adults and 1 child for 1 week - booked and paid for before the pounds dismal performance against the Euro).

Llafranc looked nice too - and I would also stay in Platja d'Aro just down the road or San Feliu (but IMHO S'agaro is sooo much nicer - but no good if you like busy resorts).

I went to Lloret around 30 years ago - and my childhood memories are fond. I did no more than drive through this time so have no idea what it is like now. Santa Susana was another resort I short listed - but again I am clueless as to what it is like, ditto Tossa del Mar. I am sure someone more knowledgeable will help out.

There are loads of camp sites and self-catering parks all along the coast - but again, August not the best month budget wise.

    Hope you find somewhere.

LLoret de Mar would be easy to get to (about 35 mins by car)and lots for the children - lovely beach. More refined and a lot quieter with beautful coastal walks and lovely old castle jutting out from the beach into the sea is Tossa de mar , just a short boat trip round the next bay,15 mins by boat I would guess.. You can also get a bus from the bus station from LLoret to Tossa de Mar.

try callela de parafrugell, or mot of the resorts on the bay of roses, includeing l'escala and cadaques. avoid lloret if you dont want it busy. if you have a month ry some of the hostels in a samily room- many have good facilities and the best situations http://www.hihostels.com/dba/hostels-Empuries---L-Escala-051086.en.htm
alternativley good apartment site are above and also try www.interhome.com it i often cheaper to hire car for week then pay for longer airport transfers

Estartit is nice. Have a look at Castell Montgri - plenty of companies rent caravans there. We stayed a few years ago with a more obscure company but unfortunately I can't remember the name as it was nice & cheap.
