Sky + box

Options
Hello,

We needed Sky as we don't have a good reception or tv ariel in the area and there was a good deal on.
I have just come to the end of my 12 month sky + contract and after a while we found that we just watched the channels that could be provided on a freeview box- so we are going to cancell SKY.

What i wanted to know, is that
1) As i bought the sky plus box, does that mean that i will still get channels that would be available through freeview, via the box and dish- or do i have to climb on the roof and put an ariel up?

2) will my sky + box still work. I.e. will i still be able to record channels and rewind live tv, if i cancell the sky?

PLease help, i'm an idiot when it come to technology
:money: Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou to everyone who has helped.

You will still get the Freeview channels.

You won't be able to use the recording features.

To be pedantic, you don't get quite the same lineup as on Freeview, but you do get a lot more free channels. (although how many of them you are likely to watch is another matter entirely.) You will need to keep the sky viewing card in the box, as a freesat card now, to get ITV/Ch4.

jem16 is right re recording facilities. Unless you subscribe to the right Sky packages, they won't work. What you could do, though, is sell the Sky+ box and get a cheap or free standard box (I see them on the local free/realcycle lists occasionally.)

If you want to record, pause, etc, you can get a hard-disc PVR which should do the trick, but make sure it can control the sky digibox and isn't limited to just aerial based channels. I think some can do that - I've got a TiVo myself, but they don't make those any more..

Not Freeview, free to view channels.

Freeview is via a TV Aerial only, nothing to do with Sky.;)

Your best bet would be to go to currys or the like and get a HD freesat box,
just plug in to the original dish and away you go, reasons for going down this option.
    1. you don't need an aerial as already mentioned
    2. HD option
    3. similar channels as your sky freesat box.

or wait a couple of months until the hd fressat pvr box comes out.

You WILL be able to use the recording features however you have to pay Sky £10 a month to keep using them so the best option is to go for the minimum 2 mix sub at £15.

    Thankyou everyone.

I probably will get rid of sky and keep the sky plus box for free to view channels, as the hd freesat box sounds really good. I assume that the box is essentailly a box which gives HD channels without the need to pay for them?

Now all i need is a tv which isn't as old as i am that could get HD.

Yes Freesat is predominantly the BBC's new Free Satellite service, you pay for the box connect it to your existing sky dish and away you go, there are various boxes that you can buy, but the main 2 at the moment are the normal freesat digi box and the freesat hd digi box ,
