new job, emergency tax code and notifying

i have been a house husband for 5 years and do not have a p45, so i would have to fill in a p46 and then be put on an emergency tax code

does anyone know how long i would be on a emergency tax code for?

i will then have to notify the working tax credits of the change, but if i do so, i would not be able to afford to live while getting taxed so heavily

would it be ok for me to notify them once my tax code is correct, or do i have to notify them straight away, if i did that then the working tax top up would be stopped and i still would struggle until i got paid from the new job, but with that being emergency tax we couldn't afford it

not sure what i should do , as we cant afford to struggle while we are on a cheap tax code

p.s i want to and will notify them of the changes without a shadow of doubt, but i have things to think about, but the last thing i want to do is run into trouble, and getting a job seems to possibly cause more trouble than i thought initially. if i notify them straight away and they adjust/stop the money, we would struggle and couldnt afford it until we got paid, and then it would be highly taxed

you get the point!

Chances are you'd be put on a Week 1 tax code which isn't a BR one so you'll pay tax as you would do if you'd given them a P45. However the difference between BR and a normal tax code is only £31 a week, i.e if you were on £200 a week on your normal tax code, your stoppages would be roughly £30 but on BR, £61 - you pay 31% of tax on the first £110 a week you'd normally get tax free but everything above that is at the same rate it would be on your correct tax code.

You sign something (possibly a P46) saying 'I have not been in paid employment since April 6th' and they'll sort of your proper tax code - should be fine straight away

Conor - do you just make it up as you go along :confused:

BR tax is 20% on everything you earn.

NI is 11% on everything over £105 per week.

The emergency tax code is 543L and providing that you dont have any other income would be the same as your *correct* tax code so you would not be intially be taxed heavily.

Providing you tick box A on the P46 there will be no probs, no BR tax and no overpayment in tax.

You would need to inform TC's immediatley.
