Want a new job but issues!!

Looks like you do have options there; esp the temping.
Just wanted to throw another possibility; although you would miss 5 weeks of college; that's actually not TOO much of a bad thing. If you know about it in advance you can prepare for it, possibly start your reading early [a good tutor would definitely understand the situation], so some course work whilst you are there [esp if some is relevant], and just catch up when you get back.
I have been taking college courses for many years; degree, diploma and now I just do them for fun! This last year, due to college term date c*ckups, holidays, tutor illness, and a day where they had no power; I and a couple of others missed 7 sessions - the rest missed 5 sessions and the tutor more than managed this. Remember that one of your weeks away might be half term anyway.
I've been there in desperation to get out of a job I hated, and put myself through a degree in order to do so and it was the best thing I ever did.
Don't think of it as a problem - having to miss 5 weeks - think of it as being able to apply your learning for 5 weeks in the real world.0 -
Just wanted to add -
Chances are that CRB check will be required; if you are lucky enough to get the timing right and be offered a job just before your trip, the check can take weeks.... (trust me, I know - was offered one job five weeks ago and still waiting and another when I was told all their clearances would take eight weeks)....so it is do-able.Blonde: Unemployed: Bankrupt.

Thanks for that Zazen999.
Got2change - I have been CRB checked more times than I've had hot dinners recently! But I know some places want another check done with their name on it so thanks for the advice on that. I'm just wondering where to approach now, I'm very scared, this full time job of 8 years is the only job i've ever had!!OU Student! - ED209, SDK125, DSE212, SK124, DSE141, SD226, DXR222, DD303, DD307 = BSc Psychology0 -
Sorry I haven’t got specific ideas, but I was in a very similar position not so long ago. There were days when I thought I was going to walk out, but I never did. We are a resilient bunch aren’t we?! In fact, I left one place of work where I had problems (my first proper job where I had been for 8 years) and took a sideways step into a place which was far worst!
I managed by drawing up a budget for ‘post work’ – the amount I needed to cover all my outgoings for a few months (had a well paid job). Then I could work out how long it would take to save that amount and when I could hand in my notice. For ages I knew my leaving date before anyone had a whiff I was going. That end date made work more manageable – knowing there was an end in sight, that I had a plan of action and that I weren’t going to be stuck there for years. I left a week before Christmas and started volunteering for Citizens Advice in January. Because I had my savings (plus tips from MSE to eek that out and up my income) I didn’t have to stress about finding a job straight away (didn’t want to jump out of the pan into the fire into a bigger fiercer fire!) and I had a bit of time to get my head straight after the work trauma.
Do you think you could put up with it all for a bit longer? Anyway you could make life better by speaking to a manager about work (and possibly show evidence so they take you more seriously)? You’ve been there for 8 years can’t imagine they would want to lose their investment in you and all the experience you have. You’ve got Tanzania to look forward to, plus you’re taking steps to make your life better so keep your chin up and don’t let the bleeps get you down! They are so not worth it, always easier said than done, but so true. Good luck with it all and let us know what you decide to do.0 -

It's tiresome, but that's the way it is ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Hmm, I'd probably grit my teeth and wait. But you could always apply for stuff anyway and mention the time you'd have to take off (before getting to the job offer acceptance stage!). You're following your ambitions so I think any *decent* employer would see that as a positive thing.0
