Want a new job but issues!!

I really don't know what answer I want here to be honest but here goes.

I hate my job. Been there 8 years and I have to call time as the job i'm doing now... I do work, credit gets taken from me, I'm spoken to like I'm thick, just can't deal with it and don't want to.

I have a DipHE in Psychology and Early Years Studies and Counselling Certificate along with the general GCSE's and A Levels and want to go into the very broad area of social services. I have recently started doing some voluntary work to get experience in the area.

I have looked around for jobs briefly and there are positions I reckon I could apply for... the thing is, in October I'm going to do voluntary work in Tanzania for 5 weeks and there's no way I would give that up, a) coz it's following a dream and b) it's paid for!!! Does that mean I'm automatically out the job hunters market til after the trip?

I'm just so frustrated where I am, I'm hacked off daily before 10am. I've even looked at part time/evening courses to progress the qualification thing further but they all start September (can't do, I'd be unable to attend lessons for 5 week!) or February, and I can't bear the thought of still being in my current role then!!

The other sticky bit is my job is well paid, so I can't afford to get any kind of trainee position or infact any position which is under 18k ish...

Any advice?

Ok, I would suggest either temping until you get back from Tanzania and then looking, or looking and being up-front & honest when you go for interviews by telling the company that you will be going for this time (taking unpaid leave of course) and hoping they think better of you because of your committment to the project.

Why can't you go for anything paying less thank £18k?

Just grit your teeth!!!!!!! You know it will come to an end soon and so that maymake it more bearable. Jobs being advertised will clearly be vacant now and so it is unlikely that they will wait for you to come back from your trip. Do you have access to internet whilst away? If so, you could apply whilst away for jobs explaining the situation.

Lots of social care jobs are short term these days for funding reasons so you may still be okay to apply, especially charity type jobs.

Temporary jobs are an ideal way to gain broad experience and can lead to an open door to a permanent job. Have a look on the nhs.gov.uk/jobs (think thats right)

    see my signature basically!!
my essential outgoings (e.g bills and petrol) are currently quite high and if I dropped below 18k I'd basically have very little to live on.

  • Don't forget most people are on four weeks notice - that gives you a week's lag on them, there's no reason you couldn't start a perm job soon as you got back if you were canny about how you handled it...

So what would I do start applying for things a few week before I go?

  • Yes, I would. People vacating roles will give four week's notice - so that's four weeks down, and some companies will be happy to wait the extra week for you to get back... it's an outside shot but there's certainly no harm in trying!!

You could look at topping up your dipHE to a degree with the OU; I believe that you'll need 120 credits (2 years part time study) for a full degree. The great thing for you is that most OU courses start in February.

I wasn't suggesting you did, just pointing out the your Tanzania trip wouldn't spoil your education plans.
