Is there free software that can use the inbuilt GPS of the Nseries 78 anywhere without hidden extras like data charges ?

The only free services that I know of require use of data connection. Sorry. And the only other way I know of is illegal and involves pirate copies so we can't discuss it here.

You can get TomTom and Garmin to work with the built in GPS ..
I would have used my own initiative if someone would have told me to!

Do you not get Nokia Maps with your phone?

You can put the maps onto a memory card using Nokia Map Loader and turn off A-GPS and you shouldn't need a data connection.

GPS is not dependant on data carriers[1] if you have an inbuilt GPS device, and is therefore free.

All you need is software that can use an NMEA GPS transmitter (by far the most common GPS 'standard')

Try searching Google for your device + NMEA + software/maps etc.

[1] There is a very rough way of triangulating your position from your data carrier's tranmitters that relies on your data carrier, but this is not GPS, and certainly isn't as accurate.
    Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries

Granted it's not as good as some of the main players, but the newer version is improved. Probably sufficient for many peoples needs. I got 3 years free subscription to voice guidance with my N95.
