Problems with Acer Travelmate Laptop

Not sure if this is a correct forum to post on but wondering if anyone has any tips.
I purchased an Acer Travelmate 4150 from Ebay to use when I'm not on the desktop PC. I have recieved it today and it keeps turning itself off... it lasted about 30mins and was working fine then suddenly started playing up.
Its not a battery problem as it does the same even when its plugged in at the mains... I think it is possibly a problem with over heating?? although if it is I've no idea if it is easily fixable.
If its left off for a bit it works again for a while but as soon as it starts getting hot it switches off and keeps switching off after about 15 seconds of restarting it

I knew Ebay was a no go but I was on a tight budget and didn't need anything fancy so picked this up for £160
Any advice would be much appriciated, the overheating thing was just a guess so feel free to correct me if you think it could be something else.
Thanks
Laura

As it is second-hand it could be something really simple such as the vents are clogged up with dust/fluff so it keeps oveheating. Try carefully cleaning out all the vents and see if this helps.0

DON'T use a HOOVER!
Static from the hoover can cause havoc to the chips in a computer!
First try blowing into the fans or but a can of compressed air to blow in to the laptop.
Watch if you have Asthma. dust goes every where!!!
It may be that the heatsink (the big bits of metal that helps cool the laptop) might need to be reseated! This is a job for your local IT shop if you are not to technically minded

You can buy compressed air in a can that will blast out the dust:
