The iMacs were all recently speed bumped in late April, so they won't be due for an update for around 6 months.

The Apple vs price argument is a mis-nomer, compare like with like. A top end high quality PC from the likes of Sony will cost similar money. You can't compare a cheap tower from a box-shifter. It's like comparing a Ford and a Merc.

(I use both PCs and Macs daily, I also own both, 2 of each in fact!)

The iMacs get rave reviews and are beautiful bits of kit, I really can't think of an all-in-one PC that comes with similar quality. The current issue of Mac user has a new review of the 24" iMac, might be worth a read for you.

Check the direct Uni purchasing discounts first, some higher ed colleges have special agreements. Else compare the edu. prices at Apple direct with Apple resellers including, for example, www.Jigsaw24.com and www.cancomuk.com

The only downside to the iMac, is it's all-in-one and therefore not as upgradable as a Mac Pro tower. You can swap the hard disc for another (but obviously there is only one bay), and you can up the RAM, do this yourself, it's simple, and much cheaper than spec'ing lots of RAM from Apple. But other than that it's fixed, like a laptop.
