Posting A Gold Ring: Insurance?

I have just sold a gold ring for £99. I am not sure how to deal with this as usually sell items worth less than £36. I sent the invoice to the buyer with a note stating that if she wanted insurance added I would find out the cost and reinvoice her but if not just pay the original invoice. Anyway she paid the first invoice so presume she doea not want.

Should I be sending it with insurance anyway (at my expense) because if lost I would be only able to claim £36 when the ring is worth £99.If so I would have to pay for it as it seems buyer does not want???

Im guessing if lost with no insurance I would have to refund buyer £99 and only claim back £36

If so how much would insurance be, I have gone onto the RM website but cannot find!!

Thanking you for your views in advance

You need to send it by Special Delivery with the insurance to the value of the ring - ie the amount paid for the ring at the time of the sale.

    SD has insurance added already

Recorded Delivery with insurance does not cover items of jewellery

You need special delivery with extra insurance.

    Hi Heskpesk.

The buyer doesn't need insurance - the risk of loss or damage is covered by their Paypal Protection - so I'm not surprised that your customer wouldn't pay extra.

Ideally (and with hindsight), the cost of insuring the seller against loss or damge should be factored into the price quoted for postage and packing.
  • As a Seller you need the insurance cover - if the package goes missing you will have no claim against RM at all

RD won't cover you so it is either pay the SD fee or take the risk

Virtually all insurance will exclude cover for jewelery, cash, etc...

My OH used to send and receive Jewellery all the time by special delivery (he used to be a goldsmith) and never had a problem claiming on it when items were lost.
