If you buy a TV licence outright that is valid for a year, and do this every year, you are paying for 12 months in advance. So what's the problem?

Paying for next years 6 months in advance maybe?

thats something that ive noticed they do years ago, which is why i changed to paying it yearly ......... its a complete pain why they ask us to pay the next years well in advance but obviously they make alot of interest from ppl that pay it that way

Over the first six months, you'll pay for your current TV Licence in monthly instalments of around £23. In the seventh month, you'll then start to pay in advance towards your next licence with twelve monthly instalments of less than £12 a month (so you'll make six payments before your new licence is due and six payments after). You'll continue paying for future licences in this way.

My point i if Ive still got 6 months left on my yearly licence why should I start paying for next years:rolleyes:

You don't have to. You can cancel the DD once this licence is paid for, but don't forget, come 6 months, you'll have to set up another DD and pay more each month again!

It's just a way of spreading out the cost so that your monthly payments are lower.

    Let's see, you pay 23.25 pounds a month for 6 months, then 11.62 pounds each and every month after that - so in the first 12 months you pay 6 X 23.25 = 139.50 pounds, + 6 X 11.62 = 69.72, which is a total of £209.22 in the first 12 months.
If you bought a TV licence outright at the beginning of the 12 month period, and then renewed it at the end of the 12 month period, you would pay 2 X 139.50 pounds = 279 pounds - you are paying 12 months in advance every year.

... because you'll also be paying 6 months in arrears.

If TV license starts Jan 2008

2008 Jan - Jun paying for 2008 license

2008 Jul - Dec paying in advance for 2009 license
2009 Jan - Jun paying in arrears for 2009 license
2009 Jul - Dec paying in advance for 2010 license
2010 Jan - Jun paying in arrears for 2010 license
