I am trying to arrange simple network for 2 computers.

the main computer is USB modem with AOL and does NOT appear to have a network card.

The 2nd computer seems to have a network card as it has terminal for ethernet cable.

The riquirement is NOT WIRELESS at the moment..

I was looking at Zoom X6 which I know is wireless, but it is meant to be good and also allows wireless in the fututre.

Can I install network card into computer running USB modem and then replace that modem with X6 and then run ethernet cable to other computer into that network card.

Is it as simple as that, and do I just need bog standard ethernet cable or do I need cross over type.

I am really just looking to share internet and printer at the moment

Thanks in advance

If the zoom is a standard router it will usually have more than one ethernet port so you would attach both pc's to that and that would access the dsl connection. easy peasy once you have made the 2nd pc network capable

Yeah I thought as much for shared internet access.

However for file/printer sharing do you know if I require crossover cable?

A crossover cable is only required when connecting two PC's back to back. You will be able to share files/printer though the router.

You don't say how far apart the computers are? Same room, different rooms, different floors? That might affect your choice of networking. For example, I have computers on the other side of our house which I wouldn't dream of running an ethernet cable to, so I use ethernet-over-mains known as HomePlug or Powerline networking. A good (and cheap) supplier for these is Solwise - http://www.solwise.co.uk

    Thanx for the clarification.

I want wired at the 2 computers are next to each other. Out of interest why would you use Homeplug/Powerline networking as against normal wireless networking via a router?

No problems with range due to the makeup of the internal walls. Also higher speeds than wifi.

Good question. My house is large and has thick walls so a single wireless router won't cover the whole house. So I have a powerline adaptor in my office plugged into the main adsl/wireless router, another one in the shed and then a combined powerline/wireless unit at the other end of the house to give my daughter wireless access from her bedroom. In the next few days I'll retire this unit and replace it with a Fon box and a regular powerline adaptor.
