You must be the brains of the operation
  • The cheapest way to LEGALLY obtain page layout software is to buy the oldest version you can get your hands on, and then purchase a version upgrade.

I'll use Adobe InDesign as an example (simply because this is what i use, and because I think XPress is a pile of crap in comparison!).

InDesign CS2 (version 4.0) is expensive to buy... its about £550 on windows and £650 on mac.... however if you go over to eBay and buy a retail version of the old InDesign 1.5 for £20 or something (they appear now and again), you can then buy the InDesign CS2 upgrade for just £150!... saving you HUNDREDS!

I suspect you could do something similar with Quark? Buy XPress 4 or something, and then buy the upgrade to 6.5/7.0? But Quark is overpriced anyway. You also have to pay more for the "passport" version of Quark which supports all regions/languages, whereas InDesign supports them all at the same price. But of course, Adobe can offer the stuff cheaper than Quark... because they can bundle InDesign with Creative Suite making Adobe prices look far better.

    Cheers.
Is Ndesign that different then? As I may consider purchasing that instead and try and teach myself bit by bit

Suggest you download the 30-day trial from:

The reason I think InDesign is better is because it just has soooo many more useful cool features than xpress... and i've used xpress 6! Quark is still used by the huge majority of the industry (probably 70-80% or more i should think), but many are (and have already!) switched to adobe. It also links in well with Photoshop and Illustrator... Acrobat/PDFs... and the new Bridge... so its all good. InDesign replaced the now-retired PageMaker...

Its very debatable though... just take a look on the web about Adobe vs. Quark... but we use indesign for our student union magazine...
