Broadband in France - Advice needed

A friend is moving to live permanently in France in a few weeks and asked for my advice on Broadband over there. I had to confess that I knew absolutely nothing. Can anyone enlighten me?
For instance do they use the same equipment as in the UK? Do they have the same wide choice of ISPs? Can any particular ISPs be recommended? Is mobile broadband a viable alternative in France? How can we find out more about setting it all up?

The going rate for 16Mbit ADSL, router, VOIP and digital TV in France is around 30 euros per month. My impression from French colleagues is that they are much further ahead than us in terms of speed and quality of service. The French may list their ADSL as 20Mbit but this isn't using the same measurement as we do in the UK. For TCP/IP connections it is really 16Mbit. Connections are typically subject to the same 12 or 18 month contract that we get in the UK.
As with the UK you have a choice of operators. e.g.
