Regards hearing from the student loans comany - It depends on whether your son applied for an income assessed or non income assessed loan. If he went for a non income assessed loan then you may not here anything as the student loans company won't need your income details.

If he went for income assessed, you should have received a letter with an application form to fill in with your income details. Seeing as your son applied online, he may have opted for you to send details online too. Then you would need to send any evidence, P60 or wage slips etc, to them separately. Either way you should receive a letter. Did your son apply quite late?

My parents didn't know much either, I just shoved pieces of paper in front of them saying "sign this please"... whilst explaining how the system works.

The SLC is useless for sending out letters quickly but if it's been longer than 2 weeks since he submitted his bit you should check he went for income assessed.

Haha thats exactly what I did. My grandparents are paying for living costs i.e. maintenance and mother screamed and shouted at me when I told her I got maintenance loan as well (although she doesn't really understand that the interest paying is less than svaings account). Nevermind!

Thanks again for all your advice :D , I have today completed my online details to support ds's application & have sent off the relevant paperwork that they have asked for to confirm our incomes. DH spoke to the studentdirect helpline today & they have told us that ds does not have to apply separately for any bursaries/grants as the info will automatically be sent through to the relevant depts once they receive the info we have sent them & then we should hear back afterr approx 4 weeks. I think ( & hope!) ds should be entitled to some sort of grant as we are on a low income - I couldn't believe how expensive student accommodation is- it's almost as much per week as we pay for our house!

We've apparently got just under 2 more months to apply for his campus accommodation, I'll start stocking up on bits & pieces for him now as some of you have advised!

The accomodation depends where he lives. Stafford for me was a measly £2285, my friend in Soton is £3.5k and my gf who is going to London next year is £4.5k....

But nice one on doing everything, hope you son enjoys it wherever he is going!
