AVI stitcher or WMV to AVI converter ...recommendations

Looking for piece of software, preferably free, to either convert WMV to AVI (see below) or stitch multiple AVI files into one AVI file.
I have done it with Windows Movie Maker but it turned my 11 files totalling 235Mb into one 2,2 Gb file (way too big!!!) and can create into one 35Mb file!
