No Sound!

Options
The sound on my laptop has suddenly stopped working and was working perfectly fine 2 days ago. It doesnt even let me do system restore :(, everything is unmuted, also tried volume buttons on my laptop, it is a ACER ASPIRE 5610.

Sometimes when i click on volume control it says this:
There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, Go to Control Panel and Other Hardware, and then click ADD HARDWARE

however I can get through to volume control sometimes and everything is unmute.

here are some screenshots:

  • it could be a problem with the audio drivers. you could try downloading the latest drivers from www.realtek.com.tw

it will be in your add and remove programs but you will need to know which update it was eg kb 23586. click on control panel then on the add or remove icon and click on show updates at the top.
failing that try rolling back the driver for the sound, through the task manager box.
But i think i would ask for help on the m/soft site first before doing anything it is a very good and free forum like this but just for computors.

Ah! This just fixed it for me (on Vista):

Method 5: Reload the current sound driver

1.Click StartVistaStartButton.jpg, type Device Manager in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

2.In the Device Manager dialog box, expand Sound, video, and game controllers.

3.Locate the audio device that was included with the computer.

4.Right-click the device, and then click Properties.

    5.Click the Driver tab.

    6.Click Uninstall.

7.Make sure that the Delete the Driver Software for this device check box is cleared, and then click OK.

8.In the Device Manager dialog box, click the Action menu, and then click Scan for hardware changes.

You should see a message that a hardware device is being installed. Additionally, the uninstalled audio device is now present in Device Manager.

9.Close the Device Manager dialog box, and then determine whether you can hear sound.

    Thanks all!
