  • Try assigning a fixed ip address to the adapter.

hi, how do i do that :) i do not have a static ip address
  • first I need to find out some details about your connection. can you click "start", "run", type "cmd", then in the black window that appears type "ipconfig /all". when you have done this, post the results on here. thanks

It's probably down to a glitch in the usb adapter driver try updating it, not sure if setting a fixed ip will cure this i have seen at least one where it didn't work.
Try disabling the on-board ethernet adapter in device manager that has helped on a few occasions. let us know how you get on

  • if you go onto the settings page of your adapter, there should be an option to choose the ip address you connect with. enter "192.168.1.2" under this same section you should be able to enter the subnet mask and default gateway, enter "255.255.255.0" and "192.168.1.1". then you should have the section for dns servers, there are two spaces for these, but since your connection only requires one, just enter "192.168.1.1". Apply these settings, then disconnect and reconnect. hopefully this will work.

This is likely to cause more problems as
    a. if the lappy is off this address may be reassigned
b.the usb adapter may report everything as normal based on signal strength alone and ignore the fact that the correct communication protocol is not being followed, so no network access.
The OP will need to check the routers DHCP server for its assignable address range and assign one out of that range if he wants to go static ip route.
