Washing machine, help me please!!!

My 10 year old washing machine is about to throw in the towel. Its not rinsing properly, and it makes a terrible noise when it goes into spin. I'm pretty much broke so I need a new machine that is cheap (must be less than £200 including delivery) and reliable. Must do cold fill, I never have hot water! All suggestions welcome, I live in Middlesbrough.

Thanks for the link, but the delivery charge is £29.95 on top of the bid price, which takes them all out of my price range. I'm surprised that people are bidding so much for goods that are damaged/used! Its a clever way for Comet to get rid of their display stock.
  • Hi
my OH is a domestic appliance engineer, basically your machine is on its last legs but you may as well use it till it completely dies on you ( if you can stand the noise) The bearings have probably gone and it would be uneconomical to repair (but do check this with local engineer). My OH would advice you to steer clear of the lower priced goods as he frequently gets calls for these macines at 12-18 mths old and they are wrecked!! They certainly dont make em like they used to! He says a good reconditioned machine would be a hotpoint WM62 or WM64 ( expect to pay around £150) and if you can get hold of one of these models keep hold of it for as long as possible as they can be repaired a lot more cheaply than models of today. Also have you rung around locally for B graded stock?-this is appliances that may have a little cosmetic damage to outside, it may be on side and you wont see it when its insitu! They are new machines that have been returned due to minor bumps caused in transit. This way you may be able to get a better quality machine at a cheaper price! One of our local spare parts suppliers buys these by the pallet load so perhaps look at local shops like this and at least they may be able to refer you to someone else if they don't sell them themselves! Also he tells me regarding the cold fill-get down to plumbing shop and buy yourself a Y connector/ y piece ( cosy about £1) and fit it to both connections on machine and single end to cold fill on taps! Hope this all helps. Good luck!

if you look carefully they also sell ex-display model. true i wont fancy buying an used/returned washing machine but remember they come with a 12 months warranty. as a matter of interest i just took delivery of a bosch washing machine from comet auction website. its an ex-display machine. it arrived in bubble wrap and is as new condition. transit bolts still in place and drum/machine has not been used. saved £120 over a new one. have noted bosch command a high price but other makes like lg, indesit go for much lower price.
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

Susie, many thanks for your info. I currently own the WM63. I had a look at the John Lewis web site and they have a couple of washers for less than £200 and free delivery and TWO YEARS guarantee. Finances dont permit me to spend more than £200.

If I had the money I would be shopping on the Tesco site as some of their more expensive items have extra points.

I'll have a trudge around the local shops, see if there are any bargains to be had, but getting the two years guarantee from John Lewis is a big incentive for me.
