    hi,

    Re-written -

    Dear Sir/Madam.

I am writing to you in order to seek permission to repeat level three level of my Bsc Psychology degree in the approaching academic session of 08/09.

I have been unable to successful complete my course this past academic session as I have been and continue to suffer with clinical depression seriously affecting my ability to function. This has been particularly apparent in the past 6 months as things have become intolerable within my family and I was dismissed from my employment and then found holding down another job almost impossible. In the past year I have had a number of family issues; due to my illness each affects me to a much deeper level than would be expected in a well person. I continue to be treated by a Doctor on a regular basis and I am able to provide a sick note to support my medical condition.

It seems that I was wrongly informed that I was eligible to attend only for exams and this has made completing work difficult as I have had very little guidance or feedback. I felt unsupported and combined with managing my illness have floundered in progressing with the work. The lack of feedback has led to me feeling that the work will never be completed has caused me to feel frustrated and added to my feelings of depression.

I have recently altered my medication and have taken a number of steps to alter my life for the better which seems to be bringing my illness under control. I am continuing with counselling and through this I have gained the strength to move out of the family home and into a place of my own with the consequence that the impact of my family’s issues are minimized upon me. I am also seeking professional help with my eating problems and am in the process of creating a supportive network to help me to be positive. I intend to continue this process and hope that this will continue to affect my illness positively.

I believe I can benefit from being allowed to repeat my third year with attendance at the relevant lectures and seminars. I greatly enjoy the course as I find it both relevant, challenging and interesting.

I hope to be hearing from you shortly.

    Many thanks for your time,

    Thanks for any input

Dear Sir/Madam.(do you know the tutors name who you are writing to? Put this in the real version)

I am writing to you in order to seek permission to repeat level three level of my BSc Psychology degree in the approaching academic session of 2008/09.

I have been unable to successfully complete my course this past academic session as I have been and continue to suffer with clinical depression seriously affecting my ability to function. This has been particularly apparent in the past 6 months as things have become intolerable within my family and I was dismissed from my employment and then found holding down another job almost impossible. I continue to be treated by a Doctor on a regular basis and I am able to provide a sick note to support my medical condition.

It seems that I was wrongly informed that I was eligible to attend only for exams, and not tutorials or lectures, and this has made completing work difficult as I have had very little guidance or feedback. I felt unsupported and combined with managing my illness have floundered in progressing with the work. The lack of feedback has led to me feeling that the work will never be completed and has caused me to feel frustrated and added to my feelings of depression.

I greatly enjoy the course as I find it both relevant, challenging and interesting and I see it as important in helping me achieve my aspirations of becoming... (or some other reason why you want to do the course).

I hope to be hearing from you shortly.

    Many thanks for your time,

I think the bulk of what you've written is fine but to be honest I think it's suffering from too-much-information syndrome. They don't need to know about your family issues or eating disorder, when you read through the letter it's kind of one thing after another and doesn't really leave you feeling positive. If I were reading it I would be thinking 'whats next?' That is not a slight on you or your condition at all but I think its needs to be refined. I would just say you've had personal problems that have worsened your condition and would focus more on the fact you really want an opportunity to complete the course. I would probably ask for a meeting too, then you show you're serious and can go into the exact reasons for your problems (if you want to) in person, this always comes across better than in writing imo.

medical/doctors certificate or somesuch would probably sound better than "sick note".

    Scrap the both.

Generally I think it's OK. I do agree there's probably a little more detail in there than you need to provide - just saying that you have had depression, can prove it, have been treated and are improving is probably enough. So maybe trim down the eating and family stuff.

I'm sure they'll contact you if they require further detail.

    hi,

I had to submit it this morning and I think maybe I did give too much infromation but I am so worried they will think I have just been lazy and couldnt be bothered to complete the work this past year. I have never heard of anyone having a face to face meeting with the board - its a bit of a secret who exactly is on the board tbh so I cant see that being offered.

I just hope I get it the chance to do my year again now.

Don't worry about giving too much information, I was quite detailed when I submitted mine and the woman advising me on it said usually she advises to keep them concise but it was worth keeping it all in. I know you've already submitted it now but if you'd like to read mine to compare I'd be happy to send it to you.

I see you're in Preston, so is this UCLAN you go to? That's where I went, what course do you do?

Read mine again last night and it was a lot longer than yours so it'll be fine I'm sure. I sent it to the MSN email address in your profile since it was too big to paste into a PM!

I was doing Media Tech and it took me a long while to realise that I really didn't want to work in TV. I was going to switch courses but that never happened for all kinds of complicated reasons. I loved living there even though I'm sure it looks different to when I last saw it (2 years ago!), the uni is growing like a mold!
