Discrepancy between AA (Glass's) & Wisebuyer Valuations
Options
I am looking to buy a used Volvo XC90.
On various advertised examples, I have obtained valuations from AA (powered by Glass's) and Wisebuyer.
The latter always seems to give considerably lower valuations. In one case today, almost £3k less in terms of retail value.
Could it be that the free Glass's valuations on the AA site are not current, maybe delayed by one or two months? In other words, only by paying £3.50 on Glass's own site (or £2.95 on one or two other sites) will you get up-to-date valuations.
Also, if I walk into a dealer and say that one of their cars is valued by Wisebuyer at £2k less than their asking price, will they take me seriously?
Many thanks.
Peter

Never heard of wisebuyer before, the AA ones might be a bit out of date, Glasses have to keep their value.
I have paid for Glass's prices before but only when I knew exactly which car I was looking at and all it really did was confirm the price the dealer was asking for, as they get the price from Glass's
Try Parkers and What Car for some more prices.
I don't know how much you are looking at spending but getting 2k off the windscreen price is not out of the question.0 -
The way VED is going wisebuyer might be a better bet. Although again I have never heard of them.
Big car big engine bargain hard they will be giving them away in a few months...lol0 -
Thank you both, this is very helpful.0

Inside the last 3 months used cars in general have taken a big drop in value. A combination of credit crunch (borrowing for a car more expensive), fuel prices and people getting over sensitive about VED charge increases.
Bigger less economical cars have of course fallen the most. I would go by the lowest price you find between all the guides and go around making offers for cars you like at or below this and don;t worry about being told where to go by a few sellers.
For this kind of vehicle it's very much a buyer's market, something to keep in mind when you come to resell it!0 -
T the end of the day they are only guide prices anyway.0

Glasses, CAP, HonestJohn, Parkers are all called "guides" for a reason...!
Customers who come to me telling me that their PX is worth more according to Parkers annoy me.
They soon shut up whan I ask to see what Parkers suggests I could be selling my car to them for...
At the end of the day, its the price in the screen and negotiation skills that determine the price.
Stuff like the XC90 are weak at the minute, so you should be expecting a generous discount on the one you mention.
They key to knowing what cars are really worth is to do you research - go out there and look, make notes, compare them via autotrader.co.uk with others that are available.0 -
A car's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.... personally i ouldn't pay more than £500 for anything made post 1985....0
