Anyone had a problem with their Wireless/LAN switch on the front right of Sony Vaio. I've been trying to sort out my wireless connection ( or lack of) and think I've narrowed it down to a faulty switch. Its 6 months old and all I got from PC world was a phone number for Tech Guys . I got a freephone alternative from saynto0870 and although they answered quickly, told me I have to contact Vaio Link Centre ( ANOTHER 0870 with no alternative number) I feel like I am being passed from pillar to post, I naievly thought that if a product was under warrantee, PC world should fix it (DUH). So, is this a common problem with this laptop?

you can call 01932816000 and ask for vaio support.
also the on line support is relatively quick. if they can't help over the phone or online, they will pick it up with DHL without charge
    good luck

Try posting your query on the PC Advisor help forum [http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forums/index.cfm?action=showforum&forumid=1] I find them really good and usually really quick. And/or you can do a search in case your question has already been answered on that forum.

If you're confident it's a faulty switch rather than a software problem then you may as well try Sony as it should still be under warranty. I wouldn't really rely on PC World's technical expertise. If there's a problem with the warranty etc then I'd definitely demand PC World/Tech Guys take action as even with a manufacturer warranty they're still legally liable for fixing the fault under the Sale of Goods Act.

Thanks guys. I did get one geographical number for Vaio, but a robot told me to ring the 0870, but I'll try the other one. I'm not completely sure its the switch, which is why I want to talk to Vaio before I storm back to PC world and insist that they they are liable. Dont want to make a scene if it turns out I'm wrong ( although the techie I called out on Tues suggested its the switch.

These switches are normally soft switches (does the switch click into place or just spring back?).

I'm not familiar with Vaio's but certainly two different laptops I have used recently are like this.

There is usually a utilility installed which you can use to enable the Wireless card through software.

Have you had a good look through the VAIO installed utilities and tried to enable?

Well, thought I'd update, if only to pass on a bit of information. After a lot of **** ing around, being passed from pillar to post,I took it back to PC World and firmly, but politely told them to FIX it. The girl there realized that I was serious and she had a look. Turns out there is a button on the taskbar that tells you about the wireless connection, and you have to CLICK IT ON, as well as flicking the switch on the front of the laptop. Now I didn't even know this button was there, so I've no idea how it came to be switched off ( she suggested it could just happen for no reason). Voila, its working!. Why couldn't she have suggested this when I first went back 3 weeks ago. I've spent £25 plus phone cals and she could have done it immediately. I apologised for being annoyed and thought I'd pass on the info in case anyone has a similar problem.
