May God bless my neighbour

Wow, what a day. I drove to the post office to pick up 2 parcels (the note in the postbox said after 4.30) but when I arrived the postie hadn't been back yet. I was not best pleased as I knew the 2 parcels contained my ricecooker and my yoghurtmaker! He told me to return in half an hour, so in a slightly foul mood I drove back to my house. Just 5 houses down from my house I spotted the recycling box outside, full of nice plastic plant pots. I am growing heaps of stuff so pulled over, knocked on the door and asked the lady whether she minded if I took them. She said of course not, good for you, would you like some more? Promptly took me into her beautiful garden and gave me another 15 HUGE plantpots, the sort I'd been ogling in the shops but just couldn't afford.
Then she offered me some large rocks (the sort you make a terraced garden with) and as I don't need any I told her about freecycle. She got really excited and SHE thanked ME!
So, after unloading them I returned to the postoffice and collected my parcels. And you know what? Yes I have fresh yoghurt on the go and yes I am happy I got them, but darn it if I am not happiest at getting all those pots for free AND getting to know my almost neighbour!
So......what have your neighbours (friends, family, strangers) made you smile with lately?

Well done - it's always nice to know your neighbours and if they are as good as this that's even better.
What's freecycle then - is this something local to your area?"It is always the best policy to speak the truth-unless, of course, you are an exceptionally good liar." - Jerome K Jerome0 -
No freecycle is a really cool invention all over the world. www.freecycle.org
you pick your country and area and people post all the things they don't want or need anymore, and other people who do want those things e-mail them to pick the stuff up. It's totally brilliant and I got a pressure cooker and a washing machine and an ab shaper from there (and got rid of my extendable washing line on there).
Give it a shot, it stops good things from going into the landfill!
Halloweenqueen, thanks but really I thought well done her, what a nice ladyLucky for me.

My OH has made me smile quite a bit lately - he's promised to take me out driving (in car parks for the minute) so I can learn to drive ASAP :j Although the insurance quote for me being added to the car is £963  I'm sure it will be less if he rings up the insurance company.
Plus this means I won't have to rely on him when I want to go out to the farmers market etc once I pass my test as I'll be able to take myself. I'll have more independance when he's not at work (he uses the car for work) and he won't be "moaning" as much about wanting a day off over the weekend when I want he to run me places :rotfl:
DVLA form is ready and waiting for him to come in and go through it with me. He's much better at this sort of thing than me when you have to read a booklet along with the form. Maybe this time I might even get around to posting it:rotfl:

I have lovely neighbours. They are older than me - at a guess I'd say they are in their early - mid 60's.
My postie tens to leave my post on my front door mat as I have a really small stupid letter box. If my neoghbours see it they will collect it and bring it over to me when I get back from work/weekend away/holiday etc, so that people don't think my flat is unoccupied. I think it's really kind of them.
When I had a birthday party in the summer I let them know in advance and asked them to get in touch if the noise was a problem etc etc. They couldn't have been nicer and even sent me a birthday card and insisted that I party for as long as my friends and I wanted. can you believe that?????r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
Fantastic Nicki!!! Good for you.
I passed my driving test nearly 3 years ago - I was 25 when I finally got round to doing it properly. At the time DH was in a fantastic job and he paid for lessons for me and then bought me a car for my birthday - that was all the incentive i needed to get the test passed!! LOL
I was always one of those people who said I didnt need to learn to drive, I managed perfectly well on the bus / train. How wrong I was!! Learning to drive has been the best thing I've ever done.
As for the insurance, it was astronomicalThe only way we managed to do it was for dh to take out a 2nd policy in his name for my car, and have me listed as the 2nd driver. It still cost £900 for the first year - but came down massively after that. If you go down that route, it's worth remembering that at the end of the 1st year, when you take out your own insurance, that your dh can transfer the 1 years no claims earned on that policy into your name. It then gets you 1 years no claims bonus to 'put towards' your own new policy.
Does that make any sense???I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are – Milton Berle0 -
Thanks for the freecycle link. I've been trying to find it for weeks and couldn't remember what it was called!
My neighbours are great too! They saw that we were struggling to cut back the ivy growing on our yard walls and they came out and hacked away at it with us. It took several evenings but we've done it.
Also, my DH's boss gave him a lift home from work when I had an asthma attack recently which meant I could get help without worrying about taking my son to hospital.
I'm getting much better at accepting help when it's offered rather than trying to do everything myself!May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
I had suspected german measles last weekend (got sent home from work at 1am) and so rang OH on the sunday afternoon to tell him... his mum was in the background and asked what was up and was like "is she ok?" etc. Minutes after getting off the phone i got a text message saying "Mum wants to know do you want a sunday roast bringing round? Theres plenty extra here and you probably wont be up for cooking. " I was so made up his mum was had thought about me - really made my day. (i politely declined though as didnt feel up to a meal and had some homemade soup in the slowcooker!)0
