Help! Learner Driver

I know this is nothing to do with techie stuff but thought i'd try get some opinions....i was out for my usual lesson this week, learning about controlled (emergency) stops. My instructor put a few senarios to me and jsut wanted answers as she wanted me to come back with opions on the last one on what drivers would do if they were in this position:

Your driving along with 4 other passengers in your car, listening to loud music, there is a lorry following close behind, a rabbit runs out in what do you do?

Senario 2 - exactly the same as 1st one except its a young child runs out,

Opinions please.

    1). Keep driving

    2). Emergency stop/swerve/don't hit child

It is what I would do certainly

Couldn't agree more :) and in both situations, turn down the music - it's a distraction and reduces your reaction times.

You keep driving. It's a rabbit. There's not even a legal obligation to stop after the event (you only do that for certain animals).

But yes, you shouldn't have the loud music on, it's a distraction.

If it's a young child that runs out then you have an obligation to do an emergency manoevre, which may include emergency braking. You should be able to quickly assess if there's anywhere else to swerve to though (although music might distract you and impair your decision making abilities)

If a lorry IS too close behind, it's often a good idea (if it's otherwise a clear road and you're just out for a random drive) to let him pass so you can drive more safely without him up your harris. While he is there you are having to adjust your driving and responses to take into account his presence so it's best to be rid of him if you can.

These are the 2 answers i gave my instructor, the first answer was correct as if you were to brake you are risking the lives of those passengers in the back of the car, my instructor didnt comment on my answer for 2nd senario as i was asked to ask about and get other opinions, im glad they seem to be the same as mine!

    2) Emergency stop isn't the right answer but neither is it wrong. The lorry will still pile into you as it would've in 1) and the child would still likely get hit.

    2) Is a moral dillemma. There's no right or wrong answer. It's more a question given to make you think about the consequences of your actions.

what about slowing down marginally so if you do have to make an emergency stop, with that lorry up your backside, hopefully he would see you brake in time. would probably also warn other passengers about him tail gating as well

As long as everyone is wearing their seatbelts then a rear impact shouldn't be fatal because the energy from the impact of the truck would cause the car to continue moving forward with momentum with probably only whiplash for all in the vehicle.
