I think that I'm covered, but before I call, I want to just ask some advice from you wise people.
I recently managed to lose my camera at an event that I went to (nothing work related). Wasn't stolen, completely my fault, but hopefully I'll be able to claim.
I've checked my policy, and the value of the camera is well below the limit of a single item, and its not excluded from items that I can take out of the house, so it should be covered that way.
I've a very standard policy with Direct Line.
My question is - if I call up and say that I've just lost it (therefore not stolen etc), will they pay up? Is that what they mean by accidental loss. And if so, what would be the best way to explain it to them?
Thanks in advance...

Hi ... just tell them what you know about the loss, and despite everything you may read, sometimes Insurers accept the truth and pay out, so don't pre-anticipate difficulties that may not occur.
Do expect to be asked:
- if you have reported the loss to the police
- for receipts or proof of purchase of the camera (sometimes tricky - but maybe bank statements can help if no actual receipts can be found)
- do you have any photos taken with the camera - good if it is a digital camera where the saved file (on a pc or disk) can show details of which camera was used etc. and/or details or documents showing photos being developed.
Hope this helps, maybe just even in a small way, see how it goes and good luck!If many little people, in many little places, do many little things,
they can change the face of the world.

Hey
Firstly insurers will want the full low down on when you had the camera last, whe you noitced missing, what you did to trace the item. Only then can they confirm if oyou are covered.
whilst most policies cover items away from the home upto a small limit of say £500 the wording sometimes states that for the loss to be covered a policy peril has to have occured. ie it was stolen from a bag
i would just double check the specific wording section and ring insurers. whats the worst they can say?

Accidental loss is a specific peril...
The OP should be fine. The phone call (provided they have Personnal belongings/all risks) will go one of either two ways-
1. They will believe you and appoint suppliers/cash settle with you
2. They wont, and will send the claim for conversation managment.0 -

Whilst you are correct accidental loss is a policy peril. there is still the fact that most policies WILL NOT COVER ACCIDENTAL LOSS AWAY FROM THE HOME.
only the standard basic perils. accidental loss or damage to home or contents is normally to be requested by the insured! and not normally part of standard cover.
this is what i encounter every day when people lose items but don't have the correct cover for the incident.0 -
I love to know who you adjust for, given that RBS, HBOS, Norwich Union and Morethan policies (so what, at a guess 80+% of all household policies?) cover loss as standard under their personnal belongings/possessions cover.
If you are being sent on claims and having to decline them for the simple fact of no cover then somebody isnt doing their job properly in your office!0 -
