I just tried; gettting the joining fee off... it didn't work! Apparently, though, there should be some offers coming out in July for the Summer...

    hi there,

i used to work for LA Fitness and what you will find most gyms have is:
    (eg:)
    Monthy Fee 39.95 peak membership
    Joining fee 100
    Admin Fee 39.95

all gyms will have an administration cost for getting everything going, some may call it a joining fee and have it all wrapped in one, some may have a joining and an admin.

When i worked at LA Fitness, we had the ability to wipe out the joining fee without even asking (i never charged anyone it because it was just such a con). However we had to get an administration fee which was (at the time) 39.95. If we didnt get this we would not get paid any commission as it was not a complete membership and you would flag up as a problem member everytime you enter the club.

In the larger chains, like LA Fitness, you cant negotiate the direct debits as they are so set in stone but in smaller private gyms you may well be able to do so.

My advice would be to ask for a free trial and test out the club, or go with the intention to join up should the deal be right. you will only get offered deals on the day you join so dont go and be determined to leave, go with an open mind about joining should you like the facilities.

Also, head to a larger chain (if you decide it is right) near the end of the month as we used to do all sorts of deals for people but remember - if you outight ask for a deal then you wont get it, or you wont get what you could (i hated people thinking that they could just ask and get a discount). If you make sure that they know you are concerned about the price but really keen to get going you will more than likely to get a good deal.

Hope this helps people in general
