Hi, can anybody help me, my daughter needs a laptop for college, she has a £600 limit but I think I can get her to go to £650 if really necassary she needs, 512 ram, wireless and dvd writer. She would like it to be quite light in weight if possible.
Some friends have advised us against the Celeron range, so she is trying for a Pentium. (Any info anyone on this?)
So its a bit of a stretch, can anybody advise what they think or tell me about any offers please.
All help really appreciated, I really need it on this one.

Hello there,
with regard to pentium vs. celeron - celeron is a cheaper version of pentium, which uses less 'cache' (processor memory) than a pentium counterpart, thus making it somewhat slower and less efficient than a pentium of similar specification. speaking from personal experience, i feel that pentium processors are overall better than celeron processors, however the difference in performance between pentium-celeron, for lightweight 'college' stuff like surfing the internet, typing up a Word document, etc, would be negligible.
so... I would recommend a laptop from the intel 'centrino' range - these laptops include built-in wireless as well as an intel PENTIUM M processor. Centrino laptops are also designed to be lightweight and with long battery life, thus making it ideal for portability in a college scenario.
'Centrino' laptops are basically laptops with built-in wireless and a PENTIUM M processor
1- Packard Bell £650 - Pentium M processor, 512MB RAM, wireless, nice screen
2 - Packard Bell £600 similar to above but £50 cheaper
3- Compaq £650 - 1.4 Celeron M, with wireless, etc - more reliable manufacturer (HP/Compaq)
4- Toshiba £700- £50 above your budget, but with a toshiba laptop, you can't really go wrong - 1.73ghz PENTIUM M - widescreen, dvd writer, wireless... 512mb
Hope this info helps.

You can buy laptops a lot less than £600.00 and there is nothing really wrong with celeron processors. If you don't mind a refurb go to https://www.medionshop.com goto Clearence shop tab and then on that click grade "A" goods. they have Celeron® 2.2 GHz laptop there at £375.00, Dell has a inspiron 2200 for £444 which has a Celeron® M Processor 360 (1.40 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 400MHz FSB) and 512 memory, evalue code 305-N10221 change service to 90 days collect and returnWelcome, rogerramjet.

Hi ehosin,
May I just point out that 1 and 2 are the same item!!!!!
Also, don't forget to use a Dixons / Currys discount code for that item
Thanks.0 -
I got an Inspiron 6000 from Dell a few days ago for £600 with Centrino and 512 DDR2 RAM, 2MB L2Cache and a DVD RW with a 15.4 screen.
Admittedly I did have to moan at the sales guy to give me the offer which had just expired but hey I got what I wanted0 -
I've just got a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo L. It's a Celereon but that doesn't matter too much depending on what you're using it for.
512mb, 40Gig hdd, fairly light, DVD writer. wireless.
Cost £499
edit : duh.... got it from Dabs.0 -
our local Woolworth sells the MEDION for 399 GBP -- again ....
Incl. writer, 15 " screen
You can buy a lot of memory ... for the add. 250 GBP ... you have 'available' ...
in 6 months the 'thing' is as outdated ... as anything else for twice the money ... is the common computer world wisdom ...
So ... it is YOUR money ... don't be fooled0 -
xueta, do you know what codes are current and working please?0
