Private circuits are normally used inter-company or between two companies who have excessive traffic between them. I would say that the majority of 0870's would be delivered to a geographical numbers.

I am aware what most private circuits are normally used for,and i agree that at the moment most 0870 numbers would be delivered by piggy backing on to geo numbers. However private circuits can be run direct from an exchange to the customers switch, and not terminate on a geo number.

They can also be terminated on a voip connection, and their may not be a geo 01/02 number associated with that connection.More companies are using this method of delivery.
The question was do all 0870 numbers have associated geographical numbers? and the correct answer is NO.

There will more than likely be a geographical number associated with private circuits. Though it may well be the case that the alternative geographical number has not been made available/revealed to the user. Therefore I believe that the answer I gave was 'reasonable'.

I recall reading a lengthy thread on the https://www.saynoto0870.com site discussing this very matter. It concluded if i remember correctly, that it was possible to have a ngn number without a geo number associated with it.I cant find it at moment but when i do i will post the link.

When 0800 and 0845(0345) were first launched calls were delivered by private circuit and no geo number,s were associated with them then.

  • The majority of 08 numbers have an associated geo number. However, not all do so it would be incorrect to give a categoric "yes" to the question of all 0870 numbers terminating on geo numbers.

What is definitely the case is the majority of 0870 numbers do not have a geographic number associated with them. Commonly, the geo number used may vary according to the time of day of the call, where you ring from etc (e.g. a common plan is to send calls to a different call centre according to your ITV region). In some cases, the Interactive Voice Response system ("press 1 for this, 2 for that") is provided by the network rather than the corporate customer, so you'll end up at a different location according to which option you choose.

This is the reason why many companies don't like people ringing the geo number....it isn't the loss of revenue share, rather that it ties up call centre staff redirecting calls to the correct location (contrast the revenue share/minute - maybe 1 or 2p, versus the cost of running a call centre seat - probably 25p+ per minute and you'll see why).
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...
  • Regardless of the discussion we're having here - why not email your comments on this consultation to OFCOM - the address is within the documents that are linked in the first couple of posts in this thread.

They want consultation - give them consultation :) (They already have my views)
There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't

In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice

Ok cheers, that clears things up.

Out of interest, do you have any relevant links on this topic? Particularly links that prove the above rather than discuss the issues.

There was a piece on today's You and Yours programme on Radio 4 about this consultation. Listen to it in Real Audio here.

I disagree with you. I believe that when they were first launched, 0800 did have alternative geographical numbers associated with them and that these numbers were not revealed to the customer.

What evidence do you have to back that up?
