Switching to Linux

After having to reformat my hard drive due to the incompetence of Bill Gates and his cronies, I am thinking of trying out Linux. This will be on dual boot, and I will be buying a commercial distro for (hopefully) relative ease of install etc.

A few questions:-

1) Can anyone recommend which of the commercial distros is easiest to set up, most user friendly, most/best software included etc.
2) I've heard of issues with linux and ADSL modems? Anyone have any more info on that?
3) Good places on the net to buy the software?
4) Do the commercial distros come with some sort of partitioning software/set this up at install or do I have to negotiate that myself?
5) Any other tips from people who havedone similarly?

I am reasonably pc savvy and have done a bit of research, but it never hurts to get tips from people who might have already dipped their toes in.

Thanks in advance.
Nice to save.
